almost everyone at my university uses USB drives, they’re still an easy way of moving files around between the university networked computers and your own. Even now with cloud services like Google Drive, and Dropbox accessible from the web.

In my first year I renamed my USB drive to my own mobile number. Mobile numbers are very easy to recognise, here in the UK they all start with 07xxx.

That way the day I forgot I’d left it in a university computer,

  1. it was handed into the IT helpdesk
  2. where they checked to see if there was any way of identifying it…
  3. and then proceeded to do the obvious; phone me to let me know they had it.

Perhaps there are some issues with university staff handling my lost personal data, but I was happy to get my £12 of storage back.
